16th European gliding championships in Pociunai

Just after European gliding championships ended in Nitra another one started in Lithuania, Pociunai with open, 18m, and 15m classes. Opening ceremony took place in a nearby town Prienai and the championships is now officially open. First competition day cancelled due to stormy weather. Today first competition day with AAT tasks.

General info

16th European gliding championships is being held in Lithuania, Pociūnai from 1st to 13 of August.   A total of 75 competitors from 19 countries gathered to fight for three sets of medals:  25 in 15m, 29 in 18m, and 21 in open class. Louis Bouderlique, Russell Cheetham and Peter Harvey are the defending champions in 15m , 18m and open classes respectively.

Pociunai

It is already a fifth international competition which is held in Pociunai. The first women World championships was successfully organized in 2001 followed by three European championships in 2004, 2007 and 2009. This year FAI trusted to organize another EGC for flapped glider classes.

Pociunai is situated 9km from a small town Prienai and about 40km from the second biggest city Kaunas. It is gliding’s Mecca here in Lithuania. Aerodrome has a really good infrastructure to held such events. Airfield is really big (more than 100 hectares), plenty of sailplanes can land at the same time. Take-offs and landings are possible to any direction. 800m long runway (04-24) for aircrafts which are unable to land at the grassy runway. Large hangar for briefings. Clubhouse-bar arranges meals for all the glider pilots and their crew. This year a pool and a volleyball-court was built for more entertainment (tennis court is under construction). Camping in a woody area provides a cozy shelter, one can collect mushrooms and hazel nuts, set a camp-fire in the evening. Nearby a factory where all LAK gliders are being made. It has everything that is needed for air-tourism and championships such as this.

Flying day 1

AAT tasks for 2:30 hours has been set to all classes. Forecast seemed similar to yesterdays but with less showers. Launches began at 13:00 and the start line opened at around 14:00 for all the classes. Nobody lingered for too long and started few minutes after the start line had opened. According to glider pilots weather was difficult with showers at some point and big “holes” without clouds at another. Nevertheless more than half of the competitors managed to finish the task. However we already have a few upsets – open class defending champion Peter Harvey lands out and losses 500 precious points while Riccardo Brigliadori flew only for 92km and lost even more points.

For the upcoming days weather should improve, therefore we are looking forward for more exciting flights.
