16th EGC Pociunai. D5: 600km plus tasks!

Fifth day started with nearly 700km for an open class. 600km plus for others. Latvian pilot spent the night in a glider somewhere in the fields. Good day for French and UK pilots. French pilots maintains lead in 15 meter class, while Poland is still dominating in 18m. Petr Krejcirik is no longer a leader in an open class. Updated 22:00

General info

16th European gliding championships is being held in Lithuania, Pociūnai from 1st to 13 of August. A total of 75 competitors from 19 countries gathered to fight for three sets of medals: 25 in 15m, 29 in 18m, and 21 in open class. Louis Bouderlique, Russell Cheetham and Peter Harvey are the defending champions in 15m , 18m and open classes respectively.

Day 5

It seems that someone from “above” took the “weather” from Nitra and gave it to Lithuania. Another superb day with an average speeds of 135km/h.

Briefing

Briefing is held in the hangar and starts everyday at 10:00. Competition director – Vytautas Sabeckis, Task setter – Algimantas Jonušas, Chief scorer – Ričardas Rusteika and meteorologist A. Natalia give the necessary details for the current day using prepared presentation. Pilots carefully listen to information about airspace restrictions, meteo, take-off and landing procedures and tasks. Today task setter surprised competitors by setting more than 600km. There was also variant B if weather would have turned out to be worse. Finally A tasks remained valid.

Tasks

15 meter class – 632,3km around the Kaunas international airport control zones.

18 meter class – 660km also around Kaunas airport but with one TP in Poland.

Open class – 684,6km. First TP to the North of Lithuania, second to the east just by the border of Latvia and then South.

Grid

Grid started at 8 and closed at 10:30. Today it has been put forward for half an hour, because organizers wanted to start launches earlier. Long tasks awaited competitors.

Grid is divided into two parts. Each class has his own side with open class in the rear. Two traffic coordinators command for each side and has fifteen tug planes altogether at their disposal.

Launches

At first middle cloud layer, which mysteriously occurred during the night, inhibited sun’s insolation and delayed launches. When it dissipated about 11:00 first puffy cumulus clouds started to form, so launches was decided to begin at 11:30. Yet again it took less than 40 minutes to take everyone in the air.

Unfortunately today Latvian pilot Voldemars Gavars did not start. Apart from all kind of technical problems with batteries and navigational systems, he had spent the night in his glider somewhere in the fields. Yesterday, the last time he talked with his crew, he had given his coordinates and approximately his whereabouts, but then his mobile phone went off. When his crew arrived to approximate position he was nowhere to be seen. Later it become too dark, so search resumed only after dawn. When Voldemars came back, briefing have already been over. He was also very tired and decided to skip todays flight.

Starts

The tasks were too long to wait for something better, therefore everyone started within half an hour interval after the start line had opened.

Results

15m

The biggest upset of the day in 15 meter class is Andreas Lutz’s last place in the task. He lost more than 500 points and dropped from 5th to 13th place. Ruch Christophe won the day and with his team-mate leading the championships. Lukasz Wojcik still holds his third place. Denis Guerin, Ghiorzo Stefano, Breidahl Henrik fourth, fifth and sixth place respectively.

18m

Even though Russell Cheetham won the day it was not enough to overcome Polish pilots in overall standings. Karol Staryszak and Zbigniew Nieradka showed that they are one the best and finished second and third, thus still remains championships leaders. Peter Eriksen 4th, Wolfgang Janowitsch fifth, Ed Johnston 6th and Ronald Termaat 7th.

open

UK pilots ruled the day. Defending champion Peter Harvey finally won his first task during this contest, but sill far behind the leaders. Petr Krejcirik did not do well today and dropped to the third place. Markus Frank from Germany took the lead while Janusz Centka from Poland back in the second place. Fourth and fifth place still occupied by two Frenchman.
