16th EGC Pociunai. Exciting Day 6

A very exciting 6th competition day. 360km tasks before cold front. Gyorgy Gulyas, Wolfgang Janowitsch and Janusz Centka outlanded. Three French pilots in top 3 in 15 meter. Poland dominates in 18 meter. Frank Markus increases lead in open class.

General info

16th European gliding championships is being held in Lithuania, Pociūnai from 1st to 13 of August. A total of 75 competitors from 19 countries gathered to fight for three sets of medals: 25 in 15m, 29 in 18m, and 21 in open class. Louis Bouderlique, Russell Cheetham and Peter Harvey are the defending champions in 15m , 18m and open classes respectively.

Day 6

Two racing tasks variants has been set for 6h competition day.

A: 15m – 366km, 18m – 365, open – 387km;

B: 15 – 259, 18m – 281, open – 284km;

Cold front was approaching… Cirrus clouds have already covered the release areas and delayed take-offs for some time. The task setter was launched to check the conditions, but after release he reported that the weather had not reached the required temperature and the air was “dead” so far. Almost no lift until he got to about 250-300m. Then he finally hit 1.5 m/s thermal, which lifted him up to 750m. The weather has started! Organizers confirmed launches at 11:45.

Since the air mass with good conditions for soaring was still very close organizer had decided to stick with variant A even though some of the good pilots as Janusz Centka kept saying that “it is a one way ticket”. The task setter is very experienced pilot and knew what he was doing (he succefully set all 13 tasks during the 15th EGC in Pociunai at 2009), therefore he held his own.

Start opened:

Start line for 15m class will be opened at 12.34
Start line for 18 m class will be opened at 12.36
Start line for Open class will be opened at 12.48

For the cold front was at the doorsteps everyone tried to start as soon as they could. And it seems  that 5-10 minutes made a big different. Those who started later or stuck on the way even for a few minutes, had troubles before the last TP and wasted precious time or even landed out.

First finishers emmerged before 17. More than 90 percent of the competitors have finished their tasks. Though some even after landing couldn’t believe that they had made it. The task has been set correctly…

Front must have had an influence on the results. Some of the pilots had very decent flight while others struggled throughout the course. The diffrence in points between ninth and tenth place was more than 100 points which is strange and proves that not all pilots flew in the same conditions.

Championship leader Louis Bouderlique suffered 300 point loss but still remains among the top 3. His two compatriots Ruch Christophe and Denis Guerin finished among top 5 and are now first and second respectively. Lukasz Wojcik dropped from third to 7th place. Once number 1 in the world in the IGC rankings Gulyas Gyorgy have outlanded and burried his chances to win the championships.

18m

The winner of the day was Ronald Termat with JS1, followed by the competition leader Karol Staryszak whho now increased lead by more than 150 points. Zbigniew Nieradka remains second. Russell Cheetham had a bad day and is now in fourth place. Peter Eriksen from Denmark overcame him in an overall standings. Ronald Teermat and his compatriot Dortu Maurits stepped into fifth and sixth places. Wolfgang Janowitsch had a very good run throughout half of the task (third TP he rounded with 136km/h speed) but made a serious mistake later and was forced to land and is now only 11th.

open

The biggest upset  in an open class is Janusz’s outlanding. According to the poll “Who will become a champion at 16th EGC Pociunai” he was considerd the favorite to win the championships in an open class. His attitude before the start might have influnced his desicions and now from second place he dropped to 12th. Frank Markus from Germany is again the winner of the day and increased lead by 200 points. Petr Krejcirik moved one place up since Centka had landed out. Two Frenchman in third and fourth place and it seems that English pilots have finally found their “form” and started climbing in overall standings.
