16th EGC Pociunai. Day 9

It was another exiting day here in Pociunai. AAT for 2 hours for all classes for it was expected some showers and overcast as yesterday. Lukasz Wojcik (LI) broke his glider. France still dominates in 15m, Poland in 18m. Russell Cheetham climbed to third place overall.

General info

16th European gliding championships is being held in Lithuania, Pociūnai from 1st to 13 of August. A total of 75 competitors from 19 countries gathered to fight for three sets of medals: 25 in 15m, 29 in 18m, and 21 in open class. Louis Bouderlique, Russell Cheetham and Peter Harvey are the defending champions in 15m , 18m and open classes respectively.

 Day 9

It become common to fly before a coming front and 9th competition day was not an exception. Low cloud base and strong wind with gust up to 10 m/s meant that there will be a difficult day again. After yesterday organizers chose the tasks very carefully (AAT for 2 hours) and hesitated with launches even though soaring conditions were already good enough to sustain flight.  After some doubts it was decided to start with only one class and they’ve picked 18m.

After 18m class starts conditions improved and since no sailplanes have landed back to an airfield organizers started with 15m.  After a long pause, which could be the case why so many pilots from an open class have landed out or used an engine, they started with a long ones. Just after launches a rain and high level clouds blocked the sunshine over the airfield region, therefor some of the pilots had troubles starting or even landed back to an airfield.

Finishes

For quite some time it was thought that it is going to be like yesterday when we heard “69 ten kilometers”over the radio. Since the first gliders to take off were 18m class so they were the first to appear on the scope too. Soon afterwards a huge storm was coming from the north-west towards Pociunai which brought heavy rain and gusty wind.  Pilots had to go through the rain! Everything turned out well and  those who flew reached the airfield.  Center of the storm passed more easterly and luckily it did not block the path completely for 15 m pilots who showed up just after. Open class glider came back half an hour later.
