General info

Gliding Grand Prix is a race with gliders throughout a pre-set route. Unlike in conventional competition everyone start at the same time, so whoever crosses the finish line first wins the day, provided he does not get any penalty seconds. To complete the task it usually takes about 2-3 hours. Scoring system is also different. 10 points for the first place, 8 for the second, 7 for the third and so on. There are 10 qualifying competitions during the year. From each competition two best pilots get the ticket to the final, which will be hosted in Wasserkuppe, Germany 23 to 32 Jul 2011.

Italians made a very superb webpage with a tracking system. Using “Condor” flight simulator and detailed maps, made from satellite images, creates a very realistic view. It is possible to see current competition situation, flight trajectories, 3D objects on the ground, glider’s model and its parameters such as height, speed etc. It is also possible to watch how pilots exploit thermals and ridges. All of this allows to feel the spirit of the competition and flight’s dynamic. Comments are in Italian though frequent overview in English is also given.

According to the organizers weather conditions at this time of year are very favourable for soaring and can be both thermal and wave conditions. So far they are right! After two fast days Georgio Galleto is leading with two wins in a row and already has 20 points in his pocket. In the second place is Corrado Costa (Italy) with 15 points followed by Peter Hartmann (Austria) with 14 points.
